Cruise Overview

Cruising through Southeast Asia is one of the easiest ways to experience multiple countries in one holiday – without repacking every few days. Our 11‑night Celebrity Cruises sailing from Hong Kong to Singapore onboard Celebrity Solstice blended vibrant port days in Vietnam and Thailand with relaxing sea days and the comfort of returning to the same stateroom each night.

We travelled as a group of six families, which made private transport and shared tours far more cost‑effective in several ports.

Getting There (Perth → Hong Kong)

We flew from Perth to Hong Kong via Singapore Airlines and arrived a few days early to settle in before embarkation. We stayed at Regal Kowloon Hotel prior to the cruise (we’ll cover Hong Kong in a separate blog). This pre cruise stay helped us adjust to the weather and explore the city at a relaxed pace.

Cruise Snapshot

  • Cruise Line: Celebrity Cruises
  • Ship: Celebrity Solstice
  • Stateroom: Veranda Stateroom
  • Route: Hong Kong → Vietnam → Thailand → Singapore
  • Style: Great for couples, families, and multi‑generational groups who want a comfortable base while visiting multiple destinations.

Our Veranda Stateroom (Why We Loved It)

The Veranda Stateroom was a perfect choice for this itinerary. Having a private balcony was invaluable – perfect for:

  • Quiet morning coffees
  • Watching sail ins and sail aways
  • Enjoying ocean views without leaving the room

The room was well designed with ample storage, a comfortable bed, and attentive housekeeping throughout the voyage.

Life Onboard Celebrity Solstice (Facilities & What’s Included)

Celebrity Solstice has a refined‑but‑relaxed feel – ideal if you want comfort, quality service, and plenty of onboard options.

Ship Facilities:

  • Expect a strong mix of spaces for both relaxation and activity, including:
  • Multiple swimming pools and whirlpools
  • Lawn Club (real grass at sea)
  • Fitness centre and jogging track
  • AquaSpa and adults only Solarium
  • Library, lounges, and quiet spaces

Dining: What’s Included (and What’s Optional)

One thing we appreciated was the variety of dining included, which meant we didn’t feel pressured to pay extra to eat well.

Included Dining Highlights:

  • Grand Épernay Main Dining Room – sit‑down dining with nightly menus
  • Oceanview Café – buffet with wide international variety
  • Mast Grill – casual classics (great for quick lunches)
  • AquaSpa Café – lighter options

In addition to these included venues, Celebrity Solstice also features several specialty dining restaurants, such as Tuscan Grille and Sushi on Five. These restaurants offer a more intimate dining experience with elevated menus and usually require an advance reservation, with an additional charge. Booking early is recommended, especially on longer cruises or sea days, as popular dining times can fill up quickly.

Drinks & Beverage Packages (What We Chose + Important Policy Notes)

We did not purchase a beverage package, simply because we don’t drink much alcohol or soft drinks and felt we wouldn’t maximise the value.

Celebrity’s Beverage Package Rule (Good to Know)

On Celebrity Cruises, if one adult of legal drinking age in a stateroom buys an alcoholic beverage package, all adults of legal drinking age sharing that stateroom are typically required to purchase the same package. This policy helps prevent package sharing.

Exceptions are uncommon and may apply only in special circumstances (for example: medical reasons, pregnancy, or religious reasons). In some cases, a non‑alcoholic “Zero Proof” package may still be required.

Tip: If only one person drinks, it’s worth calculating whether paying for drinks individually is cheaper than buying multiple packages.

Bringing Drinks Onboard (Practical Summary)

  • Wine: Up to two 750 mL bottles per stateroom are typically permitted on embarkation day only and must be in carry‑on luggage.
  • Non‑alcoholic drinks: Small quantities in cans or cartons are usually acceptable in carry‑on luggage.
  • Avoid heavy bottled items, which may be restricted.

Wi‑Fi & Packages

Wi‑Fi is available onboard, and it’s often better value when pre‑booked before the cruise.

Celebrity typically offers two main Wi‑Fi options:

  • Basic Wi‑Fi – suitable for browsing, email, and messaging
  • Premium Wi‑Fi – faster speeds for streaming and video calls

Pricing is usually per device, per day, and multi‑device plans can be useful for families.

As a general guide, travellers often see pricing in the range of USD $20/day for Basic and USD $30–$35/day for Premium per device, with discounts sometimes available when booking ahead.

Why We Didn’t Purchase a Wi Fi Package

We personally did not purchase a Wi Fi package, as Celebrity Cruises has a mobile app that allows you to message other people onboard for free, as long as they also have the app installed on their phone. This worked well for staying in touch with family members and coordinating meet ups during the cruise.

Some of our friends did purchase the Basic Wi Fi package, and their feedback was that it was sufficient for messaging and basic communication, but streaming and heavier usage were inconsistent, especially while at sea.

Tip: If you mainly want to stay connected with family onboard and check messages occasionally, the free app messaging (or Basic Wi Fi) may be enough. If reliable streaming is important to you, expectations should be managed, even with Premium packages.

Cashless System & Money Onboard

Celebrity Solstice operates on a cashless system, so you don’t need cash for onboard purchases. Everything – including drinks, dining, spa treatments, and shopping – is charged to your SeaPass card, linked to your credit card and settled at the end of the cruise. All onboard prices are in USD.

Cash is mainly needed while ashore, such as for independent tours, taxis, souvenirs, extra tips, or the casino. Pre paying gratuities is recommended, and there is an onboard ATM if needed. For a smooth trip, use a credit card onboard and carry small amounts of cash for port days.

Photo Packages

Photo packages are available onboard, but we skipped them because we prefer taking our own photos (and we’re a bit camera shy!). If you love professional family portraits or want hands‑free holiday photos, it may be worth reviewing the package options before sailing.

Entertainment & Activities

Evenings on Celebrity Solstice were a highlight. The ship’s Solstice Theatre features high‑calibre, Broadway‑style productions – think musical revues, acrobatic elements, and live music.

A well‑known signature production is Amade, a creative show blending classical and modern music with acrobatics.

Beyond the theatre, there’s usually plenty happening across lounges and shared spaces – live music, trivia, themed events, and daily activities – while still keeping the overall vibe relaxed.

Evening Chic / Gala Night at Sea

One of our favourite moments of the cruise was experiencing the ship’s Evening Chic nights. We really appreciated Celebrity Cruises’ modern take on gala evenings – stylish and elegant without feeling overly formal. Everyone embraced the night in their own way, from cocktail dresses and jumpsuits to smart suits and polished evening looks, creating an atmosphere that felt relaxed yet effortlessly special.

On those evenings, the energy onboard noticeably lifted. The Grand Plaza buzzed with music, the dining rooms felt extra festive, and it gave us the perfect reason to slow down, enjoy a memorable dinner, and capture some of our favourite photos from the trip. Evening Chic nights added a touch of glamour to our sea days and made our journey through Vietnam and Thailand even more unforgettable.

Shore Excursions: Our Port Experiences

We booked our shore days independently (not through the cruise line) because cruise‑run excursions were noticeably more expensive – especially when travelling as a group.

Instead, we organised private transport/tours online and shared costs across families.

Independent tour note: Any third‑party tours or transport mentioned here are not affiliated with Celebrity Cruises. Independent excursions can be cheaper and more flexible, but you’re responsible for timing – always leave a generous buffer to return to the ship before all‑aboard.

1) Hạ Long Bay (Vietnam) → Hanoi Day Trip (Private Group Tour)

We arranged a private group tour with a private bus and guide.

Plan:

  • About 2.5 hours each way between Hạ Long Bay and Hanoi
  • Stops included Incense/Hat Village, Train Street, a pagoda, and other city highlights

Safety note: Access to Hanoi’s Train Street can be restricted at times – always follow local rules and safety guidance.

Includes: transport + guide + lunch

Cost: USD $35 per adult / USD $18 per child

2) Chân Mây (Vietnam) → Đà Nẵng & Bà Nà Hills (Golden Bridge)

We hired a private bus with driver to visit:

  • Golden Bridge
  • French Village (Bà Nà Hills)

Travel time: about 1 hour from port to Bà Nà Hills

Group transport cost: USD $190 (This does not include the entrance ticket. We purchased the Ba Na Hills ticket and lunch buffet separately)

Important note: If you’re picked up at the cruise terminal, there can be a port permission fee (USD $23 per person) for the return trip. To avoid this, we met our driver about 200m outside the terminal.

3) Phú Mỹ (Vietnam) → Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)

Phú Mỹ port is roughly 2 hours from Ho Chi Minh City, so we focused on a concise city overview rather than trying to cover too much.

Transport: private bus (transport only)

Cost: USD $250 per bus

Notes: Guide and entrance fees were not included.

4) Laem Chabang (Thailand) → Pattaya Beach + Floating Market

We hired two vans for a relaxed beach‑style day.

Transport:

  • 2 vans hired
  • 4,300 THB per van (up to 14 passengers each)

Inclusions:

  • 30 minute drive to Pattaya Beach
  • Visit to Pattaya Floating Market

Affordable, flexible, and perfect for groups.

5) Nathon Pier (Thailand) → Koh Samui Relax Day

Koh Samui was our slower, self‑care day.

We enjoyed:

  • Massage and spa treatments at Nikki Beach Resort Koh Samui
  • A slow, indulgent day off the ship

This was a wonderful contrast to the busier city ports earlier in the cruise.

Vietnam eVisa (Apply Early)

If your cruise includes Vietnam ports, many travellers will need a Vietnam eVisa.

Our Tips:

  • Apply at least 1 month before departure
  • Use the official Vietnam eVisa website
  • Print a copy and keep a digital version on your phone

Visa reminder: Entry and visa requirements can change and may vary by nationality and itinerary. Always confirm current rules via official government sources (or your cruise documentation) before travel.

Disembarkation in Singapore

The night before disembarkation, we were asked to have our luggage packed and placed outside our stateroom door by a set time. Celebrity provided clear instructions along with coloured luggage tags, which made the process straightforward and stress free. We kept a small carry on with us for anything we needed overnight and for the morning, including essentials and travel documents.

On disembarkation morning, we waited in the designated area until our group was called. Once off the ship, our luggage was already waiting for us in the terminal, neatly organised by tag colour and easy to locate. The process was smooth and well coordinated, allowing us to move through the terminal efficiently.

We stayed one night in Singapore after the cruise, checking into Furama City Centre, before flying back to Perth. Adding a post cruise night is a great way to avoid rushing after disembarkation and gives you a valuable buffer – whether you want to explore a little, enjoy a relaxed meal, or simply rest before your flight home.

Short Cruise Planning Tips (What Helped Us Most)

  1. Arrive early: Fly in at least 1–2 days before embarkation to reduce stress.
  2. Consider a Veranda: Balconies are gold on port‑heavy itineraries.
  3. Price‑check packages: If one adult buys an alcoholic package, others in the cabin may need to as well – do the math first.
  4. Pre‑book Wi‑Fi: Deals are often better before sailing.
  5. Independent tours can save money: Especially for groups – just build in return‑to‑ship buffer time.
  6. Keep documents handy: Passports, visas (Vietnam eVisa), printed confirmations, and travel insurance details.

FAQs

How long is the Hong Kong to Singapore Celebrity cruise?

Many sailings on this route are around 11–12 nights, often including multiple Vietnam and Thailand ports plus sea days.

Do I need a Vietnam visa for a cruise stop?

Many travellers do need a Vietnam eVisa even for cruise port visits. Rules depend on your passport and the exact ports – apply early and always check current entry requirements.

Is a beverage package worth it on Celebrity Solstice?

It depends on your drinking habits. If you don’t drink much alcohol/soft drink, paying per drink may be cheaper. Also remember the stateroom rule: if one adult buys an alcoholic package, others sharing the cabin may be required to buy one too.

Can I bring water or drinks onboard?

Limited beverages may be allowed in carry‑on luggage (such as wine on embarkation day and small non‑alcoholic cans/cartons). Policies vary by sailing – check the latest guidance in your cruise documents.

Is Wi‑Fi good on Celebrity Solstice?

Wi‑Fi is available ship‑wide, with Basic and Premium options. Pricing and performance can vary, and pre‑booking often offers better value – check current packages before you sail.

Are cruise shore excursions better than private tours?

Cruise excursions are convenient and the ship won’t leave without you on a ship‑run tour. Private tours can be cheaper and more flexible, especially for groups, but you must manage timing carefully and return well before all‑aboard.

Travel Advice & Important Information

  • Policies & pricing: Cruise policies, pricing, and inclusions are subject to change. Always verify details directly with the cruise line before booking.
  • Third‑party services: Any third‑party tours, transport, or providers mentioned are not endorsed by the cruise line. Book independently at your own discretion and confirm terms directly with the provider.
  • Entry requirements: Visas and entry rules can change. Confirm current requirements via official sources for your passport nationality.
  • Seasickness tips: If you’re prone to motion sickness, it’s a good idea to come prepared. Over the counter remedies such as tablets, wrist bands, or ginger products can help, and it’s worth packing them even if you don’t usually get seasick. A simple tip is to choose a mid ship, lower deck cabin, spend time in fresh air, and focus on the horizon if the sea gets rough. Being prepared can make a big difference to your comfort onboard.

Final Thoughts

This itinerary is ideal for travellers who want to explore Vietnam and Thailand without the stress of planning multiple hotels and transfers. With smart planning – such as private group excursions and choosing cruise inclusions wisely – it can also be very cost effective.
